The release windows worked out annoyingly and April 28th didn’t really fit in either the last post or the next one, so it’s getting its own day despite only having one game. Behold, Pocket Battle.

Pocket Battle (Sigma)
A strategy game in which you do a whole lot of menu navigation in service of trying to capture as much of the map as possible before the game ends. It has extremely basic graphics and music that can only be described as aggressively Game Boy. It’s very beep-y and incredibly loud. This game almost seems to have been made as a challenge to anyone who criticized something like Chessmaster for allowing the Game Boy to think for too long. You will spend a few seconds making a couple of basic decisions, then watch the computer repeatedly think for 30-60 seconds while absolutely nothing happens.
Despite that, it has relatively positive coverage from Japanese blogs. Both Gamesoft and the GBClover blog describe it as enjoyable despite the long waiting times. It sounds like there’s some stat raising stuff you can do with your units if you play long enough that is more interesting than anything I saw. Still, I don’t think many people would consider that worth sticking around for decades later when there are dozens of games that do the same thing without all the waiting. I did not find any professional scores.
