Revisiting Every Game Boy Game: Part 95 – June 26th, 1992

I looked at Japan’s releases for June of 1992 when deciding how to split this month into posts and saw three games. Little did I know that two of those, Home Alone and Super Hunchback, were actually localizations, so we’re back with another single game post.

Fortunately, this new release drought is ending next month. Japan got 11 new games in July and the other regions saw releases as well.

The usual reminder: Scores are out of 5 and reflect only how much a game is worth playing today. Most scores are 1s and exceptionally bad games get 0s. After Pit-Fighter in the last post, we can only really go up today.

Solitaire Game Boy

Solitaire (Hect)

It figures that the game I accidentally devote an entire post to would be Solitaire. It is interesting for two reasons: One is that, despite the name, it did actually feature a hotseat multiplayer mode where players competed to complete each board in the fewest moves possible. The second is that deleting a player profile in the Japanese version was rendered as “kill”, so if you accidentally start a two player game and want to switch back to solo, you have to kill player 2. This was changed to “delete” for the English version, which also renamed the game to Lazlos’ Leap.

It’s not entirely clear to me how the multiplayer was meant to work since most boards only have one solution. I never actually saw it become player 2’s turn in the brief time I spent with the game, although it did show a scorecard for both players. It has serviceable music that might be public domain. This is the part where I would normally tell you about contemporary scores and whether I can find anything on it on the modern internet, but let’s be honest: there is no universe where anyone still remembers this. Searching for “Solitaire” is a pain. Let’s all just agree to assume there’s nothing out there about it.
